CARD is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving people with special needs in times of disaster. CARD prepares local community groups to participate in coordinated response and recovery efforts for vulnerable populations in and around Alameda County.
Description:
CARD helps organize and prepare community based organizations such as shelters, people with disabilities, seniors, homeless and other low income groups to prepare for disasters. People with special needs means members of our community with little or no ability to address their own preparedness, response, and recovery efforts. Workshops are held for training in Self and Home Preparedness, Building Your Emergency Go-Kit, Disease Containment and Prevention Strategies. Several government agencies work with CARD to help build their capacity to more appropriately serve diverse communities.
History:
CARD was formed shortly after the 1989 earthquake. Non-profits and agencies throughout the Bay Area came together to address the preparedness and response needs or their clients and other vulnerable residents. Together they formed CARD - Collaborating Agencies Responding to Disasters - to compliment traditional disaster response agencies.
