Paws With A Cause trains Assistance Dogs nationally for people with disabilities and provides lifetime team support which encourages independence. PAWS promotes awareness through education.
Description:
Paws With A Cause trains Assistance Dogs for people with a wide variety of disabilities. These dogs begin their lives with PAWS as 8 week old puppies, placed with loving foster families whose role is to nurture them, expose them to the life in the community and give them basic obedience so they are ready to begin their training at 14-18 months of age as confident dogs, well-prepared to go on to become someone's partner. Besides supporting client-dog teams and our Foster Puppy Raisers, we also provide educational presentations to a wide variety of groups in the community: schools, civic groups, church organizations and businesses to help educate them about people with disabilities and how Assistance Dogs can change their lives. There is no charge to the clients receiving our Assistance Dogs. We have regional offices around the country and have a very active program in the Bay Area and part of the rest of Northern California.
History:
PAWS was founded in 1979, beginning as a non-profit organization training Assistance Dogs for people with hearing loss. Shortly after that, we expanded our training efforts to provide Assistance Dogs to individuals with many other disabilities including those related to mobility and seizures. In July of 2006 we placed our 2000th Assistance Dog.
