Our mission is to expand the life opportunities of children in low-income communities by empowering them with strong literacy skills.

Reading Partners (formerly YES Reading) works with high-need schools and operates on-campus reading centers both during and after the school day. We recruit and train community volunteers to provide one-on-one reading support to low-performing elementary and middle school readers.

Description:
Reading Partners recruits and trains community volunteers to provide one-on-one tutoring for elementary and middle school students reading below grade level. We partner with historically underresourced public schools and work closely with classroom teachers to provide a curriculum-based, results-oriented intervention for low-performing readers.

Our premise is that community involvement in our traditionally-underserved public schools is a critical component of student achievement and success. Reading Partners supports teachers and schools by providing structured reading support to children who may otherwise not have an opportunity for individualized reading attention.

History:
Reading Partners (formerly YES Reading) was founded in 1999 by three energetic and dedicated Menlo Park community members who recognized the importance of helping at-risk children learn to read. The three women worked with the Ravenswood City School District to establish a one-to-one tutoring program on the campus of Belle Haven Elementary School. In August, 2004, we expanded the model created at Belle Haven School and launched a second Reading Center at Selby Lane School in the Redwood City School District. In 2005, we launched two additional programs at schools in Santa Clara County. Building on the success of the first four sites, we launched two more programs, one in Santa Clara County, and another at College Park Elementary School in San Mateo in the 2006-2007 school year.

Reading Partners currently has 15 sites throughout the Bay Area and Los Angeles.
