The mission of Beyond Emancipation (BE) is to help former foster youth make successful transitions into adulthood and living independently.
Description:
Scope of Services Over the last 11 years, BE has become the County’s primary aftercare provider for former foster youth. Today, we offer the following critical services:
- Full service health center
- Comprehensive case management
- Transitional housing
- Life skills training
- Mentor pairing
- Educational support and advice
- Referrals for employment, supportive housing, mental health services, food, and emergency shelter
Population Served BE serves emancipated youth ages 16-24. We also provide life skills training and medical services to youth ages 15-18 who are still in care. We assist approximately 100 clients annually.
History:
In 1996, a handful of social workers from the Alameda County Child Welfare Department founded BE as a way of providing emancipated youth with more flexible services than the child welfare system was able to offer them. Originally called the Independent Living Skills Program Auxiliary, the organization secured gifts and donations in order to provide scholarships, housing assistance, and fill other gaps in resources for young adults learning to make it on their own and live outside the system for the first time.
