JCL-Jewish Coalition for Literacy aims to help reverse the trend of illiteracy across the country through one-to-one literacy tutoring with at risk young children, grades k-3.
Description:
Jewish Coalition for Literacy develops partnerships with community groups, temples, and alliances to train and place volunteer tutors in under-served public elementary schools in the East Bay, San Francisco and the North Peninsula. Individuals are welcome to participate in our trainings.
History:
The Coalition began in 1996, when former President Clinton issued the The America Reads Challenge. Leonard Fein, the noted Jewish activist,formed the Jewish Coalition for Literacy across the country as the Jewish Communitie's response. In the San Francisco Bay Area, the JCL was initiated in 1999 under the umbrella of the Jewish Community Relations Council.
