Satellite Housing provides affordable, service-enriched housing that promotes healthy and dignified living for people with limited options.

Based on its mission and core values, the following objectives are fundamental to the organization's purpose:

  • Increase the area's supply of affordable housing available to low and very low-income individuals
  • Provide uniformly high quality living environments for all of Satellite's residents
  • Enable Satellite's residents to remain independent as they age in place
  • Maintain financial strength and adequate staff and infrastructural capacity as the organization grows.
  • Description:
Since its inception in 1966, Satellite Housing, Inc. has developed 20 residential properties that provide affordable housing for over 1,400 elderly and persons with disabilities. Ten of Satellite's buildings are located throughout Oakland, while the remaining properties are located in Berkeley, Fremont, Newark, Pittsburg and Walnut Creek.

In addition to developing affordable housing, Satellite Housing, Inc. maintains its properties and provides residential services. A wide range of services, including day-to-day maintenance, large-scale improvements such as roof replacements, comprehensive screening of prospective residents, and conducting annual income recertification of our residents are provided by the Property Management Department. In order for the residents of Satellite Housing, Inc.'s sites to live as independently as possible and to age in place, the Resident Services Department coordinates social services, links residents with home and community based resources and organizations that can improve their quality of life, and encourages residents to be proactive in meeting their social, psychological, and physical needs.

The purpose of the Satellite Housing, Inc.’s Volunteer Program is to improve the quality of living and promote health and well-being for Satellite Housing’s residents, to provide low-income seniors with as many opportunities for health and happiness as possible, and to foster community by facilitating activities for the residents (such as: exercise groups, art classes, discussion groups, providing health and wellness information, leading or participating in games, assisting with special events, etc.)

Satellite Housing, Inc. has been a leader in the development of affordable housing for low-income seniors, providing a unique service-enriched environment and maintaining a long-term commitment to its residents through responsible ownership and quality property management.
