Global Pediatric Alliance is an international health non-profit. We seek to promote grassroots empowerment and improve child and maternal health by providing educational, technical, and financial support for community-based health projects in Latin America.
Description:
We offer workshops in pediatric primary care, prenatal and postnatal care, nutrition and other primary health care skills to midwives and health promoters in underserved regions. We also provide small grants to grassroots groups - communities and non-profit organizations - for projects to improve child and maternal health. More than conventional grant-making, our program is about building longer-term partnerships with communities, to support them in their own efforts to improve child and maternal health in their area.
History:
Global Pediatric Alliance was founded in 2002 by Dr. Scott Cohen, a pediatrician and former Albert Schweitzer Fellow in Africa, with the goal of empowering lay health workers through education to improve child and maternal health in poor, rural areas. Early projects included a health project in the eastern jungle of Guatemala, and workshops in Western medicine for lay practitioners in Nicaragua. Our current projects are in Ecuador and Chiapas, Mexico.
