Refugee Transitions' mission is to assist refugee and immigrant families in becoming self-sufficient in the United States by providing services to help them attain the English language, life, job and academic skills they need to succeed in their new communities.
Description:
The ESL Civics Education and Orientation Program, our core program, matches volunteer tutors with adult students for weekly English-as-a-Second Language instruction with a focus on civics education. Individualized or small group sessions take place at student's homes or at community rooms. Our Bridge-2-Success Youth Development Program provides youth with volunteer tutors/mentors to help with academic and emotional development and career preparation. Refugee Transitions also provides Family Support Services that helps clients access vital community resources and provides family advocacy for newly arrived refugees, single mothers, and others in need of individualized support.
History:
Refugee Transitions began in 1982 as the Refugee Women's Program. It is the only agency of its kind in the Bay Area and has provided home-based services for more than 2200 individuals since its inception as an independent agency in 1990.
