Big Brothers Big Sisters Of The Bay Area
Powered by Truist

Last updated on July 7, 2008

The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters is to provide a mentor for every child who needs or wants one. We help children reach their potential through professionally supported, ont-to-one relationships that provide measurable impact.

Description:
The mentors (our "Bigs"), children (our "Littles"), and families we serve come from all walks of life. What Littles have in common is a need to have a caring adult other than their parent or guardian in their lives. What Bigs have in common is a willingness to share fun, little moments that have a big impact on a young person's life. Big Brothers Big Sisters matches these children and adults, supports their relationship, and strives to present them with opportunities to learn, grow, and explore the world together. We offer two programs-community-based and site-based. Volunteers in our community-based program spend time with their Little two to four times a month, visiting museums, playing sports, watching movies, or just spending time together. Our site-based volunteers meet their Little for one to two hours per week during the school year. For the summer they only need to attend 3 or so field trips.
They share time in the gym, library, playground, or other places. Throughout the relationship, we provide orientation and trainings, professional match support, monthly activities, and more.

History:
Big Brothers Big Sisters began in San Francisco in 1958 and agencies in Santa Clara County and the East Bay began in the 1970's. On March 1, 2006, these three agencies consolidated operations to more effectively serve the entire Bay Area. Now one agency serves Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco, San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties.
We are part of the oldest, largest, and most well-respected youth mentoring organization in America.
