Opportunity Junction fights poverty by helping low-income Contra Costa residents gain the competence and confidence to support themselves and their families. At Opportunity Junction, technology, literacy and personal development combine with real world experience to put people on the road to economic self-sufficiency.

Description:
The Job Training and Placement Program works with 45 participants per year to intensively train and provide job experience in computer-related occupations. Our evening program, the Technology Center, provides evening adult education classes and assistance in computer basics and English as a Second Language. Volunteers are needed as tutors and mentors. Please contact us only if you are interested in working with us for six weeks or more - we do not have 40-60 hour volunteer opportunities.

History:
Opportunity Junction (formerly OPTIC) is a non-profit organization opened in 2000 as a sustainable solution to Contra Costa County's need to move CalWORKS recipients and other underemployed residents to economic self-sufficiency. Responding to the local demand for workers with strong technical and computer skills, Opportunity Junction trains and then employs participants as part of the DataWorks social enterprise.

The Opportunity Junction Technology Center provides free classes, workshops and guided study for adults. Classes include English as a Second Language and Computer Skills. We also provide drop-in computer access and individual tutoring as tutors are available. Classes are offered Monday-Thursday 6-9 p.m. at our location. Students can come at any time to register. Students may come on any evenings they choose.

Directions:
If you are coming East on Highway 4 to get to Antioch, take the Somersville Road South exit 26A (first Antioch exit). Stay in the left lane as you approach the light at the bottom of the off ramp; both lanes turn right, but you'll be turning left at the first street intersection, which is Delta Fair. Stay in the leftmost lane as you turn left onto Delta Fair, and then take the first left onto San Jose and turn immediately left again into our parking lot. Our entrance actually faces San Jose, so once you turn into the driveway, you should turn right and park in the San Jose-facing section of the parking lot. If you are coming West on Highway 4 to get to Antioch, take the Somerville Road exit 26 (last Antioch exit). Turn right at the light at the bottom of the off ramp and pass under the freeway. You'll be turning left at the first street intersection, which is Delta Fair. Stay in the left most lane as you turn left onto Delta Fair, and then take the first left onto San Jose and turn immediately left again into our parking lot. Our entrance actually faces San Jose, so once you turn into the driveway, you should turn right and park in the San Jose-facing section of the parking lot.
