Organize and work with volunteers to help restore and maintain the creeks in the City of Walnut Creek and educate the public about proper stewardship of creeks and waterways.
Description:
Friends of the Creeks organizes several events a year, the largest of which is the annual downtown creek cleanup on the second Saturday in May. At various times during the dry season, we remove arundo and other exotic vegetation from the creeks to improve habitat. We also do some work on the butterfly habitat in Civic Park. Our stewardship activities include working with the City of Walnut Creek to implement the creek master plan, advocating for keeping creeks in their natural state when development occurs, and working with neighborhoods on creek cleanups and flood control.
History:
In 1990 the City Council appointed a task force to create a master plan for the enhancement of the creeks in the downtown area. Following adoption of the plan in 1993, the task force members decided to incorporate as a nonprofit organization, Friends of the Creeks, to work with the City of Walnut Creek to implement the plan they had developed. Over time, Friends of the Creeks’ vision of this partnership has extended to removing arundo and other invasive exotic plants from the creeks. We have moved beyond the downtown creeks to helping neighborhoods in various parts of the city with creek issues and to advocating for creeks in new development projects.
