NIAD provides an art program for adults with disabilities, which promotes creative expression, independence, dignity, and community integration. We encourage the self-directed life and support people making choices for themselves wherever possible.
Description:
NIAD is an art studio for adults with all kinds of disabilities, most often developmental disabilities. We believe in providing the freedom to create for all people regardless of the extent or type of disability. We create the following types of art: painting and drawing, sculpture, textile, printmaking, ceramics, multimedia. We provide an open studio, experienced teachers, adaptive aid where possible, and some independent living skills instruction. Clients come to NIAD on a flexible schedule during the week, 9 am to 3 pm, Monday through Friday. They work in groups of approximately 8 with a master artist teacher in that area - possibly painting or fiber arts or one of the others - for 3 hours in the morning and 2 1/2 to 3 hours after lunch. Lunch is an hour at noon and there are two 15 - 20 minute breaks during the day. Clients can change the media area they work in once every quarter, giving everyone a chance to experiment in all areas. Clients have many opportunities to participate at NIAD. Clients take field trips to museums or art shows. They are encouraged to have studio jobs for which they are paid, such as washing the paintbrushes or wiping down the tables in the garden. They have regular "Town Hall" meetings to decide on issues related to the running of the studio, and the chance to show and talk about their art to their peers. They are invited to attend the opening receptions of the art shows in NIAD's gallery. Sometimes they are invited to help give lectures and demonstrations to classes and audiences at colleges and universities. They can work and hang out in our raised bed mixed use garden growing veggies and flowers. Volunteering at NIAD is entertaining, varied, inclusive and rewarding. You won't want to leave.
