Last updated on December 5, 2007

Our mission is to inspire respect for and stewardship of the natural world while providing a quality visitor experience.
Our zoo's purposes, as an American Zoological Association-accredited facility, are conservation, education, research and recreation.

Description:
Providing the highest possible quality of life for the captive, wild animals residing at the Oakland Zoo is our primary focus. Educating our visitors about these species, and others, is our goal.
Conservation is a primary concern at the Oakland Zoo. We are actively involved with many researchers and organizations, dedicated to various conservation projects around the world. With help from our members and sponsors, we are able to address a wide range of conservation issues such as promoting research in conservation biology, supporting conservation education, aiding in rehabilitation of endangered species, fighting the illegal wildlife trade, and saving rain forests.
We are successfully supporting local communities and biologists to protect wildlife, create awareness about biodiversity and the ecosystems that sustain it.

History:
The Oakland Zoo was established in 1922, by naturalist Henry A. Snow, at 19th and Harrison Streets in downtown Oakland. Snow Park now occupies the site of the Zoo's first home. The Zoo moved to Knowland Park between 1936 and 1938. Since 1982, the Zoo has been managed by the East Bay Zoological Society as a non-profit organization. The EBZS has a 25-member Board of Trustees representing diverse business and community interests.
