Preserve and improve our three acre Nature Area as an outdoor learning environment for school children and the local community.
Description:
The Walnut Heights Nature Area is managed by a volunteer from among the Walnut Heights Elementary School parents. This volunteer is responsible to ensure the Nature Area remains a viable outdoor classroom where the students and community can come to enjoy and learn about nature, natural sciences, conservation and wildlife. The ongoing effort to maintain this area receives no funding from the Walnut Creek School District and is reliant on generous donations of time, resources and manpower to maintain a vibrant Nature Area for the children of this and other communities.
History:
The Walnut Heights Nature Area began in 1969 when a small group of dedicated parents and a local area expert in Horticulture decided it would be a good idea to develop an area behind Walnut Heights School where school children from around the area could learn about nature, natural sciences, conservation and wildlife. In the 38 year history of the Walnut Heights Nature Area, improvements have been constant with the help of volunteers and donations of support from local, regional and national entities. For the last twenty years we have hosted an annual community work day at which time indigenous plants and trees have been introduced, a pond was created, an amphitheatre built, a Cactus garden planted, an irrigation system installed, one-half mile of trails laid and numerous safety hazards removed or reduced. As a result, the Nature Area today, is a vibrant tool for community education on many levels.
