| Last updated on December 3, 2008 |
FESCO's mission is to serve homeless families with children, using approaches that instill or restore dignity, self-respect and self-reliance, so that families, their individual members, and the community are strengthened. FESCO accomplishes our mission by providing emergency shelter, supportive services, transitional housing and aftercare. Our agency goal is to help homeless families stay together and become more capable of becoming self-sustaining.
Description:
FESCO's comprehensive services include:
- Basic emergency shelter, including a secure, homelike environment, nutritious meals, needs and situation assessment, information & referral to community resources.
- Supportive services include goal-oriented case management; counseling for adults, families and children; life skills education in topics such as parenting, self-esteem, budgeting & money management; children's program; and employment and housing services.
- Transitional housing includes our 4-unit 3rd Street transitional housing (18-24 month stays), Banyan House transitional co-housing (6-10 month stays), and partnership in the Jobs/Housing Linkages scattered-site transitional program. All transitional programs include supportive services.
- Other programs include Aftercare and support/ reunion events, and an extensive volunteer program.
History:
FESCO is a grassroots nonprofit agency established in 1986 by a group of local churches and community members, specifically to serve homeless families. We are still the only agency in mid-Alameda County (and one of very few Countywide) that serves 2-parent families, single fathers, and families with a teenage son, as well as single mothers. The Les Marquis House emergency shelter (24 beds, 24-hour, year-round) opened in 1988. The 4-unit 3rd Street Transitional Housing opened in 1999. The 8-unit Banyan House opened in 2002. FESCO's counseling center opened in 2001, and in-house employment services were initiated in 2003.
