To provide a dynamic, life-affirming, homelike environment where privacy and self-esteem are respected, freedom of choice and expression are encouraged and opportunities for meaningful participation and contribution are supported.
Description:
Chaparral House is a community-based secular non-profit skilled nursing home for 49 frail elders ranging in age from 68 to 99.
History:
In the early 1970s, after noticing that an elderly family member required additional care, Marion and Wally Johnson (the mayor of Berkeley at the time), grew concerned over the lack of senior housing options in Berkeley. They formed a community-oriented volunteer board and 7 years later Chaparral House was born.
