HEROES seeks to improve the educational experience of Oakland's youth by promoting volunteerism within the Oakland public schools.

Description:
HEROES believes in the power and responsibility of community members to make a difference in the lives of Oakland's youth. As the volunteer program for the Oakland Unified School District, HEROES connects dynamic organizations and talented individuals directly with youth in an effort to support students as they strive to succeed. We recruit and train volunteers to work in a variety of service roles, including academic assistance, campus support, and special event staff. In addition to placing school volunteers, HEROES fosters sustainable relationships between community members and schools by building the capacity of Oakland’s schools to mobilize lasting support to improve education.

NEW! HEROES READERS Project
The ability to read is critical to a child's success, yet sixty-six percent of Oakland's third graders can not read at grade level. You can help struggling students Read, Believe, Succeed with the HEROES Readers Project. The HEROES Readers Project aims to increase the number of trained one-on-one literacy tutors helping Oakland's struggling readers thrive. HEROES Readers are better prepared to enter the classroom because they possess the concrete skills and tools needed to assist students as they learn to read. For more information, check out our Opportunities listing or log on to www.oaklandheroes.org.
