The mission of the Berkeley Adult School is to ensure that adult learners have equal access to learner-centered education and training as a lifelong process in a cohesive, supportive, and multicultural environment.

Description:
Berkeley Adult School provides a number of different programs and services to the community, including a large English as a Second Language (ESL) department, a Career and Technical Education department, and an Academic department, as well as programs for older adults, adults with disabilities, collaborative services, and community services. and

The Adult Basic Education (A.B.E.) classes which seek volunteers are part of the Academic department at Berkeley Adult School. We provide instruction in basic reading, writing, math, and other subjects to assist learners in achieving their personal goals. These goals may include moving on to High School diploma or GED programs, improving job skills, helping children with school work, recovering from disabilities, etc.

The ABE classes provide learner-centered educational experiences designed to help build needed skills. These often include readings about and discussions of relevant economic, social and political issues that affect our community. We encourage learners to express themselves and become active in seeking improvement in their lives and the lives of others.

Volunteers help learners by providing additional one-on-one tutoring under supervision of the class instructor.

History:
Berkeley Adult School is part of the Berkeley Unified School District. The Adult School has operated for many years, serving Berkeley and surrounding communities. It moved from the University Ave. site to the renovated Franklin School site in the summer of 2004.
