The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a social services agency that provides emergency assistance to those in need.
No work of charity is foreign to the Society. Need, not creed determines who is helped, and how.

Description:
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a social service non-profit organization that provides tangible assistance to persons in need through person-to-person contact.
Our VISITATION CENTER is a daytime drop-in center for homeless and low-income women and their children. The Visitation Center provides a variety of services such as free laundry and shower facilities, clothing distribution for women and children, counseling, access to computers, ESL classes, as well as, many other services.
The CHAMPION GUIDANCE CENTER for Men provides homeless men in West Oakland vital services that include: shower and laundry facilities, clothing distribution, referrals for transitional housing, drug rehab counseling, and other social services.
Our FREE DINING ROOM in downtown Oakland serves nearly 1,000 hot meals per day to local homeless and low-income women, men, and children.
Our Thrift Stores provide assistance to those in need in Alameda County by providing gently used clothing and household good at reduced prices.
Our FOOD LOCKER distributes a variety of food ranging from bread to can and dried foods to our Conferences and other non-profit agencies who are dedicated to feeding the hungry.

History:
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul was founded in 1833 by Frederic Ozanam, a 20 year old student of the Sorbonne University in Paris, France. Similar groups began to form through Paris, then spread throughout France, and eventually throughout the world.
Vincentians are united in an international society of charity by their spirit of poverty, humility, and sharing.
