The Watershed Project - RFS

| Last updated on November 20, 2007 |
The mission of the Watershed Project is to educate and inspire communities to protect their local watersheds. We are a nonprofit organization offering a range of services to support healthy watersheds in the Bay Area. Programs include workshops for educators and the general public, support for creek and watershed protection groups, and a marsh and grassland restoration project.
Description:
The Watershed Project encompasses three main program areas: a marsh and grassland restoration project in Richmond, teacher and public workshops throughout the nine-county Bay Area, and assistance for community groups to help them advocate for, and take direct action in, the stewardship of local natural resources. Marsh and Grassland Restoration Project Our newest program is the development of an environmental education center on the Bay in Richmond. We are partnering with UC Berkeley to restore rare grassland and marsh habitat that is home to the endangered California clapper rail. We are developing a community stewardship program, bringing individuals, local schools, and UC Berkeley students together to restore and care for the site. Workshops/Education The Watershed Project offers workshops on gardens, creeks, and healthy alternatives to commonly used toxic products. Educator workshops are designed for teachers, youth group leaders, camp counselors, and anyone who works with school age children. All of our educator curricula are correlated to California standards. Public workshops cover topics of interest to home gardeners, bird and wildlife watchers, and people eager to promote the health of the Bay Area environment starting in their own home and backyard. Community Programs Our community programs provide capacity-building support to creek and watershed groups around the Bay Area, along the spectrum of their needs, from start-up to long-term strategic planning.
History:
The Watershed Project was founded in 1997 to develop and implement education and community stewardship programs that empower Bay Area residents to reduce their impacts on the environment and take action to protect local watersheds. The Watershed Project consistently receives awards for its programs, including, most recently, the EPA Environmental Leadership Award. The Watershed Project was one of the first watershed education organizations in the Bay Area and remains a leader in working with grassroots watershed groups.
