The East Bay Conservation Corps (EBCC) is a nonprofit organization based in Oakland with the mission to promote youth development and community service. Through service-learning, the EBCC engages young people in their educational and personal development while addressing real environmental and social issues.

Description:
The EBCC has become a leader in education reform and is at the forefront of youth and community development. Our education model prepares students for participation in a diverse democratic society by building their academic, leadership, employment and life skills, self-esteem, civic responsibility and environmental awareness. Our programs are focused on active learning strategies that motivate young people to develop a sense of themselves and their role in the community. Our schools are built on a foundation of guiding principles: academic and artistic excellence; values, ethics and spiritual development; service as a way of learning; participation in the life of the school and the community; and creative partnerships to sustain excellent public education.

History:
The EBCC has been running its corpsmember program since 1983. The program serves corpsmembers ages 17-24 who have fallen through the cracks of conventional education. Through a combination of on-the-job training in environmental improvement projects and formal classroom instruction, corpsmembers recapture their potential. They earn a high school diploma and develop job skills while they get paid work experience. Next, the EBCC has run Americorps programs since 1993, which encourage people to commit up to two years of community service in exchange for a modest living stipend and a post-service higher education award. In 2001, The EBCC opened its K-4 elementary school (now a K-5). The EBCC's elementary program offers an education environment that actively engages children in learning by integrating artistic, civic and spiritual development. The EBCC is working to open a middle school (grades 6-8) in September of 2007.
