JGate enables Jews, their family members, and others to explore Jewish possibilities in ways that address their needs. We serve as an open “gateway” into Jewish life, offering inclusive Jewish experiences, learning, and connections. JGate empowers participants to find Jewish options that work for them, including Jewish cultural connections, Jewish learning, home observance, synagogue membership, and social justice work from a Jewish perspective. JGate is pluralistic, and supports exploration of and connection with many forms of Judaism and Jewish life.

Description:
JGate holds Shabbat and holiday celebrations, Jewish learning events, and salons on Judaism and social justice. We host these events in welcoming venues that are neither Jewish nor religious. Our events center on participatory learning, sharing food, and connecting with others. They address Jewish topics many people wonder about, from a viewpoint that makes no assumptions about Jewish identity, knowledge, or practice. JGate collaborates with other Jewish organizations to help our participants connect with the variety of options within the Jewish community. We offer “Jewish coaching” for those who desire one-on-one, open-minded exploration of their questions about Judaism and Jewish identity, and about how to find or make one’s “home” in the Jewish community.

History:
Rabbi Bridget Wynne served as rabbi at Leo Baeck Temple of Los Angeles and at Congregation Shir Shalom of Sonoma. She was also concerned about the lack of welcoming “gateways” to which she could refer Jews and others who wanted to explore Jewish possibilities, and for whom synagogues were not the right entrance. Therefore, she carried out research throughout the country to learn best practices to meet this need, and founded JGate in summer 2006.
