The Berkeley-East Bay Humane Society is a private nonprofit organization dedicated to placing homeless animals with committed caretakers; to developing healthy relationships between pets and people through education, training and counseling; and to promoting the humane treatment of all animals.
Description:
We take in canines and felines primarily from other municipal shelters throughout Northern California. These animals are loved and nurtured by staff and volunteers. We provide training and behavior techniques that encourage positive behaviors while giving them a safe environment where all their needs are met. We work with individual volunteers - a vital part of our program - as well as provide educational sessions and volunteer work for groups of all ages.
History:
Started in 1927, we have a positive and stable reputation in the community as being a premier organization that uses innovative techniques to bring out the best in people and in companion animals. It began with a man named George Denny who came across three stray cats in the neighborhood and took them into his care. We are working out of the same original building in the same location all these years. There have been many programs that have been developed over the years - pet therapy, humane education, behavior consultation, volunteer programs and dog training classes.
