The American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy, and service.

Description:
There are 40 American Cancer Society Discovery Shops in California, staffed primarily by 2,000 dedicated volunteers. The ACS Discovery Shops raise funds to help support the fight against cancer by selling high quality, gently used, donated merchandise. These special items include clothing, accessories, jewelry, furniture, artwork, antiques, collectibles and other household items.

History:
The American Cancer Society opened this Discovery Shop in Walnut Creek in 1974.The store has one paid manager and a newly created position of a paid assistant manager. The remaining staff is still made up entirely of Volunteers.
The Volunteer base of each shop ranges from 40 to 150 dedicated, hardworking and loving human beings. Many have been touched by cancer in some personal way and their passion for this generous contribution of time, energy, skills and spirit runs very deeply.
