To mobilize and utilize the resources of the community to challenge the City of Walnut Creek youth and seniors to healthier lifestyles through practical education, better nutrition and physical activity.
Description:
The Wellness City Challenge has teamed up with all 22 schools (public and private) in the City of Walnut Creek as well as Rossmoor, the Senior Center, local businesses (Safeway, Kaiser, Sysco, etc.) public officials including Mayor Kathy Hicks and Senator Tom Torlakson. All schools will receive monthly stipends to support their new wellness programs to be put in place by their wellness committee.
History:
The Wellness City Challenge was started by Cindy Gershen, W.C. restaurant owner, who has lost 90 pounds and kept it off for the past 7 years. She is committed to seeing kids and seniors eat healthier and incorporate the idea of the "Slow Food" movement back into their lives. She had a vision of a community that truly cared about each other and the wellness of its youth. Her efforts to pull together schools, businesses, civic organization and political figures has turned into the Wellness City Challenge.
