The American Indian Culture and Education program strives to further the educational, social, and cultural development of Native American students and their families in Contra Costa County.
Description:
We are largely funded by a federal grant from the Office of Indian Education. We rely on support from our parent group and the surrounding community to assist us in providing the most authentic experiences for our students and families. Under this grant we provide push in Math tutoring services for students grades 4-8 and also an afterschool class held on Thursdays at Las Juntas. While we have 2 para educators working for us, we welcome volunteers to help tutor. We have another small grant that helps us equip our students with getting their gear and regalia made so they can dance at powwows and also help with dance instruction. Included in this grant is funding for our annual summer camp.
History:
Our program has been around for over 25 years serving four school districts in Contra Costa County. This year we are proud to have one of our elders, Mr. Fount Mashburn (Osage) be awarded one of three Bay Area Local Heroes by KQED. We have Native American contractors who have come out and taught gear making, drumming, dancing at our culture classes. In the past and currently, we have a list of resources we refer our Native American families to such as the Native American Health Center, Indigenous Nations Child & Family Agency, Shelter, Inc. Our 1000+ books on Native Americans have been collected over the years and currently we have videos and DVD's. We have are currently are providing services for students and their families from grades preschool through 12th grade and the Native American community as a whole.
