The organizations’ mission continues to be the provision of comprehensive services to youth struggling with substance abuse and dependency problems. Thunder Road is committed to supporting youth in their development as responsible, honorable, and self-sufficient adults. Thunder Road strives to empower youth, support their healthy transition into adulthood, their health and well-being, and their success in school. For 19 years, Thunder Road has involved youth with program design, supported healing within family systems, and reached out to youth who lack support systems.

Description:
Thunder Road is recognized throughout California and the US as a model program for youth. When we first opened our door 19 years ago, there were approximately 15 short-term residential programs in Northern California serving youth struggling with substance abuse problems. Today, Thunder Road stands alone as the only Chemical Dependency Recovery Hospital for youth in the state.
Though drug and alcohol use is trending upward, we are committed to providing teens with the tools and strategies for healthy, alcohol- and drug-free living. Patterned on the Betty Ford clinic, Thunder Road is nationally recognized for it's treatment matrix. Despite the restrictive challenges of managed care reimbursements and the complex nature of governmental funding, Thunder Road manages to fill service gaps and meets the needs of hundreds of young people with support from the community.

History:
Thunder Road, a nonprofit organization located in north Oakland and established in 1987, is a unique substance abuse recovery residential program for youth. Thunder Road provides a
therapeutic community treatment program serving youth between the ages of 13 and 20 who are in jeopardy of escalating drug, alcohol, and nicotine abuse and dependency problems. Each year more than 300 youth engaged in the program are challenged with strained familial relationships, emotional and behavioral impairments, suicidal ideation, physical health complications, multiple law enforcement contacts and ongoing juvenile court involvement.
