Our Mission: to deploy computer technology and skills to people and communities who need it the most. At the same time, by reusing or recycling electronic equipment (thus diverting hazardous e-waste from landfills), we help to protect the environment.
Description:
We divert hazardous electronic waste from landfills by offering the community free recycling of their unwanted electronic equipment. Individuals, companies and organizations can donate all of their equipment (working or non-working) they no longer have a use for.
We also provide free technical training to individuals who volunteer their time. Our trainees come from a wide range of backgrounds including students, disabled veterans, welfare recipients, single mothers, and recovering drug/alcohol addicts.
Through our hands-on learning process, volunteers acquire technical and practical skills in computer refurbishment and configuration.
We provide free refurbished computers and related equipment to disabled or economically disadvantaged individuals, to veterans, and to non-profit organizations, schools and libraries around the globe.
History:
Throughout his life, James Burgett, the Executive Director of ACCRC, has demonstrated an extraordinary aptitude in computer use, assembly and programming. Largely self-educated, with little formal technical training, James spent much of his life enthusiastically sharing with people his discovery that computers are a lot easier than most people think.
Salvaging parts from discarded equipment, he built computers for himself and then for his family. Soon he was giving computers to friends, neighbors and worthy causes. In 1994, he founded the non-profit Computer and Technology Resource Center, which then spawned the Alameda County Computer Resource Center, in Berkeley, and the Marin Computer Resource Center in San Rafael. Since its opening, ACCRC has given away tens of thousands of computer systems to local communities and to developing countries throughout the world.
