We believe that people with disabilities have a right to participate fully in work, school, play and the community, and that access to the tools of expression is the way to guarantee that right. Our purpose is to provide information and services in support of high and low tech tools in a way that respects individual differences, encourages each person's right to make informed choices, and builds the community's capability to include all its members.
Description:
The Center for Accessible Technology is an assistive technology resource, training, and demonstration center for adults and children with disabilities, as well as for families, teachers, and professionals. Assistive Technology (AT) is special computer hardware or software that can make it easier for people with disabilities to use computers. CforAT provides direct service, consultation and research for people of all ages, disability types and combinations, and technology use goals. The Center also has an accessible art studio, where people with or without disabilities can make art together.
History:
CforAT began in 1983 as the Disabled Children's Computer Group, a cooperative effort by parents, professionals and people with disabilities to harness the emerging power of computer technology to assist children with disabilities. CforAT later expanded services to include adults, professionals and families. In 2001, the Center added Access Studio, an accessible art program and studio space.
