We are looking for patient people to help adults improve their reading, writing, math and other basic skills. Although previous experience in literacy or teaching is helpful, it is not necessary; as a volunteer, you'll receive excellent training tips from adult learners themselves. And you'll help them share their life experiences in writing--each semester we produce a booklet of student writings that features powerful poetry and moving prose describing the wide range of life experiences of people of many ages, races, and backgrounds. This is a great opportunity for retirees who enjoy working with others and who seek a volunteer opportunity that strengthens our community. It is also an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in entering the teaching or literacy fields to get direct experience in a supportive setting.
We prefer volunteers who can commit to coming at least one morning per week. Class hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 12:40 p.m. Our only other requirements are that you have patience and an openness to listening to and working with others.
