The mission of the Hermann-Grima/Gallier Historic Houses is to preserve, maintain, and complete the restoration of both of the house museums, to interpret their place in and contribution to the culture of New Orleans, and to educate visitors about the history of New Orleans and its population in the period from 1830 to 1880.
Description:
Built in 1831, with its courtyard garden and the only horse stable and functional outdoor kitchen in the French Quarter, the Hermann-Grima House accurately depicts the lifestyle of a prosperous Creole family in the years from 1830 to 1860. In 1857, the esteemed New Orleans architect, James Gallier, Jr., designed a residence for his own family. Through archaeological studies and thorough review of the building contract and inventories, the Gallier House, including carefully restored slave quarters, portrays life in New Orleans from 1860 to 1880.
History:
Chartered in 1881, The Woman's Exchange is one of the oldest associations in New Orleans organized by women for women. In 1924, The Exchange bought the Grima residence at 820 St. Louis Street. For forty years, The WE and the Grima House provided chaperoned housing for unmarried women until, in the mid-1960s, the Exchange decided to change the focus of its mission from charity to education. By 1971, the entire complex was transformed into a museum designed to interpret life in New Orleans from 1830 until 1860. In 1996, The WE, in order to continue its educational mission, acquired the home of renowned nineteenth century New Orleans architect, James Gallier, Jr. Using the two houses, it is possible to interpret almost the entire 19th century of New Orleans history.
