The mission of the Institute of Women & Ethnic Studies (IWES) is to improve the physical, mental and spiritual health and quality of life for women of color and their families. To realize this mission, IWES develops culturally proficient, multi-disciplinary and holistic health intervention programs, activities and research models for women, adolescents and people of color that promote health and quality of life through social change, public policy and collaboration.
Description:
IWES projects and activities are divided into four interrelated divisions: HIV&STD Prevention; Sexual & Reproductive Health & Rights; Training & Technical Assistance; and Research & Evaluation.
History:
Founded in 1990 by two African American female physicians, the Women of Color Reproductive Health Forum (WOCRHF) was created due to the absence of multi0cultural physician leadership in sexual and reproductive health issues. The mission of WOCRHF was to increase access for women of color to comprehensive and quality reproductive health services. In 1993, the WOCRHF broadened its mission and was incorporated as a not-for-profit 501 [c] 3 organization, the Institute of Women and Ethnic Studies.
