Jewish Family Service of Greater New Orleans is a social service agency dedicated to preserving, strengthening and enhancing the well-being and self-sufficiency of individuals and families at every stage of the life cycle.

Description:
Jewish Family Service of Greater New Orleans offers counseling (child, adult, couples, and family), older adult services (Homemaker, Lifeline - a personal emergency response system, and case management), custody evaluations, domestic and international adoption homestudies, mental health education, and Teen Life Counts - a school-based teen suicide prevention program. All services are available on a non-sectarian, sliding fee scale basis.

TEEN LIFE COUNTS (TLC) is based on the philosophy that when teens are troubled, they go to their friends first. Teen Life Counts reaches over 7,000 students a year in 45 public, private, and parochial schools in the Greater New Orleans area. Volunteers and school professionals are trained to present a four-part curriculum to middle and high school students teaching them to identify warning signs of depression and suicide and to get immediate adult help.

LIFELINE, a personal emergency response system, enables elderly and disabled adults to get immediate assistance at the push of a button worn on the wrist or around the neck. Volunteers call the subscribers once a month to check the Lifeline equipment and provide caring support.

History:
Jewish Family Service was initially created to help children. When the Jewish Children's Home closed in 1948, the agency was established with a single social worker to provide counseling to the former residents. Today, the agency has over 20 employees and serves every age group, regardless of religion or ability to pay. Jewish Family Service receives funding from United Way, Jewish Federation, grants, and private donations.
