Last updated on October 10, 2008

Purpose/Goal:
To keep the handicapped/frail client involved in the community; and to enhance their sense of self worth. To engage clients in outings they may not be able to go to with family.

Tasks:
Provide assistance to clients on outings (eating out, movies, fishing, zoo, shopping, etc)with mobility and getting the most out of the event. The ADC ration of client to staff/volunteer is 1:1. The Center provides transportation for the clients and the volunteers have the option to ride the ADC bus or meet the clients at the event. Be a friend to the client, familiarize yourself with the client. Never leave the client unattended. Handle the clients money, returning unspent monies and receipts to ADC Business Office. Relax and have fun.

Volunteers need to be caring, friendly, patient, enjoy people. If the outing includes lunch the volunteer is responsible for the cost of his/her own lunch. Sometimes a sack lunch is provided. Most outings are from 11:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. It is nice if you can assist a client who is in a wheelchair, but it is not mandatory. Volunteers will need to fill out a volunteer application, criminal history check, HIPAA Acknowledgement and have a brief orientation with Volunteer Coordinator. Benefits are getting out and enjoying the event that you might not otherwise do, the satisfaction of enhancing the quality of life for another, making new friends, increasing your awareness of the difficulties of the elderly and learn how to work with them. Staff is always along on outings and there for support.
18 years old must consent to a criminal background check.
