The Foundation's mission is to inspire people everywhere to care about and protect our oceans by exploring and sharing their biological, ecological and cultural treasures.
Description:
Mystic Aquarium & Institute for Exploration is so much more than an aquarium. It's not just a place to visit ocean life, it's a unique experience in living marine creatures and the latest discoveries of our underwater world. In addition to a beautiful aquarium setting supported by a team of highly dedicated marine animal research experts, we have assembled some of the finest talent in oceanographic and deep-sea research. In fact, we're the only aquarium in the world with exhibits based on work done by Robert Ballard and his deep-ocean exploration team… fascinating discoveries you will see almost as soon as they are uncovered.
History:
Mystic Aquarium, a nonprofit marine science center, opened in 1973 as a privately owned corporation. Mr. Kelvin Smith, Cleveland, Ohio, industrialist and philanthropist, was principal shareholder. Smith, a chemist by training, had a strong interest in marine biology and saw aquariums as a showcase for both marine life and artificial seawater technology. He chose Mystic, Connecticut, as the site for Mystic Aquarium because of the area’s scenic shoreline and rich maritime history. In spring of 1999, Mystic Aquarium and Dr. Robert Ballard’s Institute for Exploration joined forces with the grand opening of a $52 million expansion. The expansion featured amongst other things, the Alaskan Coast, a one–acre outdoor beluga whale display, and a unique exhibit center focused on presenting learning, artifacts and the methods used by Institute for Exploration in deep sea exploration.
