We sponsor projects in habitat development in the West Bay and northern Rhode Island areas, focusing on the construction of modest but adequate housing by building homes in partnership with people in the local community. Our service area includes Burrillville, Coventry, Cranston, Cumberland, East Greenwich, Foster, Gloster, Johnston, Lincoln, North Smithfield, Scituate, Smithfield, Warwick, West Greenwich, West Warwick and Woonsocket. Please visit our website for more information.
Description:
Through donations of time, volunteer help, money and building materials, we aim to build homes that would become affordable to those who would otherwise not be able to acquire a home. We also rehab older homes if the structure is sound, and make home repairs for those who qualify under Habitat guidelines. Our philosophy is "A hand up, not a hand out". We select homeowners based upon financial need and their need for decent housing. Those selected become a partner with us by investing substantial sweat equity in the building of homes. To accomplish our goals we rely almost entirely on volunteer help. Our Board is entirely volunteer, and we have no paid administrative positions. Virtually 100% of our resources are invested into the homes we build. Please visit our website for more information.
History:
As an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, we obtained official status in 1996, and expanded to cover our current service area in 2000. During that time we have provided homes for six families. We are now in the middle of building a duplex in Cumberland, and expect to be building two more duplexes within the very near future. We need many forms of volunteer help: on site construction, painting, nailing, hammering, providing lunches, office work, technology, and fundraising. If you have some skills, we can use you! Please visit our website to see how you can volunteer.
