The Rhode Island Black Heritage Society is constituted for the purpose of procuring, collecting, and preserving books, pamphlets, letters, manuscripts, prints, photographs, paintings, and any other historical material relating to the history of Blacks in RI; encouraging and promoting the study of such history by lectures and otherwise; and publishing and diffusing information as to such history.
Description:
The agency curates exhibits for display at it's headquarters. These public exhibits are visited by tourist populations, student groups and the general public. We offer historic walking tours through downtown and the East Side of Providence. We research and identify historic homes and building associated with RI Black heritage and designate commemorative markers to affix to these properties. We offer a monthly lecture series to the general public at no cost. Recruit distinguished speakers to provide commentary to local business and groups during Black History Month. We have been selected as a Community Resource for PBS Independent Films series. We produce several mini and one major annual signature fund raising event during the calendar year.
History:
The agency has been in existence for the past 32 years. The agency is a cultural repository of historical African-American artifacts. The company acts as a RI community resource for ethnic, cultural and academic institutional programming.
