The Jewish Federation of Rhode Island is the central fundraising organization for the Greater Rhode Island Jewish community, allocating funds, assisting Jewish agencies locally, in Israel and throughout the world, and advocating as the Jewish voice for social justice in our community.

Description:
Values:

Honoring Jewish Tradition
Our respect for Jewish tradition is the foundation for all that we do and we conduct all our activities recognizing and respecting its value.

Tzedakah
Each of us can change the world: It is not how much you give, it is that you give as you can.

Inclusive Respect
All persons, regardless of their faith or political association, are treated with kindness, consideration and compassion.

Integrity
We conduct ourselves in a way that fosters trust, by striving for honesty, accountability and transparency.

Support for Israel
We believe in the importance of the State of Israel and work for its continued growth and prosperity.

History:
Welcome to the Rhode Island Jewish community. Ours is a rich history, dating back to the year 1658 when the country's second Jewish community was established in Newport, where Touro Synagogue is the oldest Jewish house of worship in the United States. Affixed to the sanctuary's rear wall is a letter received by the congregation in 1790 from President George Washington. In it, he promises that the United States Government would give "to bigotry no sanction...to persecution, no assistance."

Most of the state's earliest Jewish population were Sephardic Jews from Barbados. Many originally settled in Newport, and as time passed, new settlements emerged in Providence. Here, they found a thriving seaport where many of the settlers operated large retail and wholesale trade businesses that reached throughout the colonies and abroad

Today, most Jews in Rhode Island are descendents of Ashkenazis who emigrated from Eastern and Central Europe. Approximately 18,500 Jewish men, women and children call Rhode Island home. Jewish life flourishes throughout the state, supported by many synagogues, Jewish organizations, and social service agencies. The Jewish Federation of Rhode Island is the central address of the organized Jewish community and a strong link to maintaining a statewide Jewish connection.
