In conjunction with the Boys and Girls Club of America, the mission of the Cumberland/Lincoln Boys and Girls Club is to "enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens." All Boys and Girls Clubs "provide a safe place to learn and grow, ongoing relationships with caring, adult professionals, life-enhancing programs and character development experiences, as well as hope and opportunity."
Description:
The Boys and Girls Club offers more than just an after school drop-in hang out. Club programs and services promote and enhance the development of boys and girls by instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging and influence. Programs such as arts and crafts, "power-hour," science club, and numerous physical activities are just a few examples of the programs children from the nearby communities come to during after school hours to participate in. Children come here as an escape and participate in activities that are entertaining, educational, and productive. The facility itself houses a 5-lane pool where our swim team and many swim lessons and activities take place. We also have an indoor gymnasium, as well as cardio and weight rooms. In addition, there's an outdoor tee-ball field, two outdoor basketball courts, an outdoor playground, and a street hockey court. Within the building, there is an "Instructional Play" room, Games Room, "Computer Room," and a new dance room is under construction. We depend highly on volunteers to help our programs run smoothly. We are geared to giving disadvantaged youths a place to come and participate in activities and positive influences the best we can. Because we are a non-profit, and many of our members depend on scholarships in order to become members here, we look externally to the gracious community to help us in providing the best we can.
History:
The Boys and Girls Club first opened its doors to the community in 1956 at American Legion Post 14 in Cumberland, RI. The club has always and still to this day believes in being the "Positive Place for Kids," where any youth can come in and participate in any one of our programs; many free of charge with membership. The club then moved to its current location at 1 James McKee Way in Cumberland, where it houses a beautiful 5-lane pool ,where the club swim team "The Penguins" was established in 1984. The executive director of the club is Mr. Craig Bloomer.
