The mission for RIODAC is to increase donation through public education about the critical need for donor organs & tissues. RIODAC is the state chapter of the Coalition on Donation.
Description:
RIODAC members include transplant recipients, candidates and their families, donor families, healthcare professionals and representatives of other organizations concerned about promoting public awareness of the medical miracles made possible through organ donation and transplantation. RIODAC is primarily volunteer-led and operated, with an executive director staff position. Volunteers provide leadership and planning, and help spread the word about organ donation through a variety of roles. These include presenting their personal stories about organ donation or transplant to school, work and community groups; assisting at donor drives, health fairs, community events and programs, and assisting in dissemination information; and serving on the board or committees. Volunteers also have the chance to learn about many aspects of organ donation and transplantation, and share a sense of community and shared purpose with people whose lives and/or families have been touched by organ donation or transplant. We invite everyone who has an interest in promoting organ donation to join, regardless of experience. We generally meet on the second Tuesday each month in the evening, which includes an educational program followed by a general meeting to plan projects and discuss issues. In addition to public awareness projects, we also sponsor a Transplant Support Group to help people waiting for transplants and those who have received transplants.
History:
RIODAC was begun in 1985 as an all volunteer group of pre and post transplant patients, donor families and health care workers concerned with public awareness, insurance reimbursements, and patient support. Over the years we have coordinated projects with the Registry of Motor Vehicles, participated in numerous health fairs, provided speakers to schools and civic organizations, participated with a float in the Bristol, Rhode Island Fourth of July Parade, and coordinated with other local agencies that have interest and advocacy for organ and tissue donation.
