The Barrington Land Conservation Trust is a volunteer, non-profit 501 (c) 3 land trust. Since 1979, our organization has worked cooperatively in our community to preserve our unique local scenic, historic and natural open spaces through land acquisition, stewardship, education and advocacy. The trust currently owns or holds easements on over 62 properties in Barrington totaling approximately 229 acres of permanently protected natural, conservation open space.
Description:
Our volunteer Board of thirteen members manages our organization. We have a team of volunteer stewards who monitor our properties. The Land Trust also coordinates volunteer restoration and maintenance efforts at our properties. We provide local educational walks at our properties and other public conservation lands. We sponsor educational programs at our local schools and educational programs in the field for local school children. The Land Trust actively seeks donations of local natural, scenic and historic open space. We also advocate for conservation and open space planning and acquisitions in our community.
History:
The Barrington Land Conservation Trust is one of the oldest land trusts in Rhode Island. Founded in 1979 we are members of the national association of land trusts, the Land Trust Alliance. We are committed to the implementation of their standards and practices for the operation of land trusts. In addition we are members of the Rhode Island Land Trust Council and an active participant in volunteer efforts to strengthen the organizational support available to land trusts throughout Rhode Island. We have also met cooperatively with other adjacent local land trusts to coordinate our conservation efforts.

Overall Experience
Well organized and appreciative of volunteer efforts
 |
I recently joined the organization as Stewardship Coordinator. I find that management provides clear instructions, is very willing to explore new ways to accomplish the organization's mission, and appreciates volunteer efforts. I have gained a new appreciation for the important role of land trusts in protecting our local environment and preserving green space in our communities. posted by rcournoyer on January 4, 2008 |
