Pawtucket Weed & Seed's mission is to "weed out" crime and "seed" in positive opportunities so that our neighborhoods to may grow.

Description:
Pawtucket has two Weed & Seed sites in the disadvantaged neighborhoods of Woodlawn and Pleasant View. Weed & Seed is a four-component strategy funded by the U.S. Department of Justice. It is a partnership model, engaging community at all levels. *Law Enforcement - Goals are to identify, arrest, prosecute, convict and incarcerate violent criminals and drug traffickers in the target areas. *Community Policing - Here we build trust between law enforcement and residents and increase community involvement in prevention and intervention activities and programs. *Prevention/Intervention/Treatment - Social and supportive services with partner organizations or youth, adults, and families. *Neighborhood Restoration - Designed to improve the quality of life through revitalization and economic development.

History:
Pleasant View Weed & Seed began in 2001. It is in its fifth and final year of a five-year cycle, but activities established during this period will continue as Pleasant View gains Graduated Site Status. Woodlawn Weed & Seed began in 2003. In both sites, we are working to build in sustainability, so that the benefits of Weed & Seed will be reaped for years to come.

What have we accomplished so far? We have initiated Pawtucket's first Farmers' Market. We are an integral part of Pawtucket's first prisoner reentry programs, designed to make our community safer while providing intervention and opportunities for change to habitual offenders. We pay for police overtime, reducing crime in particularly troubled areas. We host a Volunteer Income Tax Center and provide free financial literacy trainings for residents. Through Weed & Seed, numerous innovative programs for youth have been established in the schools and at our Safe Havens, serving hundreds in a typical year.
