We train volunteers to tutor adults whose low English skills prevent them from functioning effectively in their homes, workplaces, communities, or as citizens of the United States.Tutoring is free of charge, is confidential unless students sign a release, and is typically done on a one-to-one basis.
Description:
We train adults to tutor other adults in English as a Second Language and Basic Literacy. Our 18-hour tutor training workshop teaches the skills needed to effectively tutor. Once the workshop is completed, volunteers are matched with a student and they meet in public locations on their own schedule for 2 hours a week. Prospective tutors must be 18 years old and have a high school diploma or GED. Lessons are typically conducted in libraries, churches, or community centers.
History:
LV of Kent County was founded in 1980 as Literacy Volunteers of Coventry, sponsored by the Coventry Public Library. LVC became the first RI affiliate of Literacy Volunteers of America, a national non-profit organization founded expressly to combat illiteracy through community-based literacy volunteer programs. In 2000, LV of Kent County became one of the first affiliates nationwide to achieve accreditation. In 2003, Literacy Volunteers of America merged with Laubach Literacy to form ProLiteracy America, of which LV of Kent County is an accredited member.

Overall Experience
Very well organized
 |
I am a new volunteer and am absolutely floored by the very high level of professionalism the LVKC operates at. All tutors are encouraged to handle students with the utmost respect and discretion.
The organization itself is very organized. Tutor training was conducted in a very efficient manner, and materials provided to the tutor trainees are very well thought out and relevent.
I highly recommend this agency to anyone wishing to volunteer and make a difference. posted by bjkruzel on February 15, 2005 |
