Meals on Wheels of RI is a private-nonprofit organization dedicated primarily to meeting nutritional and other social needs of the elderly; thereby helping them to maintain their independent lifestyle.
Description:
We are a multidimensional agency focused on providing nutritious meals for elders both at home throughout RI and in congregate sites in the city of Providence. In addition we provide full case management services and an emergency food pantry for elders in Providence. With our newest program, Volunteer Guardianship, we help to ensure a quality of life for poor, cognitively disabled elders all over our state.
History:
Meals on Wheels of RI began in February 1969, in office space donated by Grace Church in downtown Providence. It started with 10 volunteers from various churches serving 17 clients on a single route in Providence. It has since grown to include approximately 2,600 clients a day on 163 routes throughout the state. In the fiscal year ending December 31, 2002, 655,931 meals were served to over 5,200 frail people. In addition, Meals on Wheels of RI provides almost 450 daily meals at 18 sites in Providence including 2 Kosher sites 5 days a week.
