Caritas, Inc. is a continuum of family-oriented substance abuse treatment services for Rhode Island teenagers, women and their families. The organization also conducts outreach efforts through prevention and awareness programs to educate the public of the dangers that exist.

Description:
The organization conducts residential substance abuse treatment from three facilities: Caritas House in Pawtucket for teenage girls, Corkery House in Richmond for teenage boys and Eastman House in Cranston for adult women. East residential program has a managed aftercare component which helps the client and their family as their re-enter the community.

Caritas, Inc. offers various outpatient services through various locations throughout the state in order to be accessible to the population it serves. Adolescent treatment and women's treatment is offered in an outpatient setting.

Outreach efforts are conducted a speakers bureau, Parent-to-Parent and Project Ujima. Parent-to-Parent is lead by former Caritas, Inc. clients and is free of charge and open to all parents. The program enables other parents to become aware of the dangers that exist in our communities and ways to dedect and protect their children. Project Ujima is an HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention program conducted in a theatrical format and lead by high school aged teens called peer educators. The program targets inner-city schools in Rhode Island and is known nationwide.

History:
The organization was formed in 1971 by current executive director, Susan D. Wallace. Caritas House, the organization's initial program, was the first program in the country to offer residential substance abuse treatment for adolescent girls. The organization has continually strived to meet the demand of the population it serves by providing effective and accessible treatment options.
