Cumberland School Volunteers, Inc. is a non-profit corporation dedicated to the development of and support for volunteer programs in the Cumberland Public Schools.

Description:
CSV registers both parent and community volunteers, provides training as needed and provides volunteers to staff at their request. Cumberland School Volunteers develops additional volunteer opportunities through its own programs. These programs currently include Reading Is Fundamental (RIF), Just Friends - More Alike Than Different, and Lunch Bunch.

History:
Cumberland School Volunteers was founded in 1967 by ten Cumberland residents who strongly believed that volunteers could be effective partners in the effort to increase the success of students in the public schools. Mrs. Margaret-Ann Gardner initiated the proposal in her home community after witnessing first hand the significant impact that volunteers had working with children at the Lippitt Hill Tutorial Program in Providence. Peggy Gardner served as the Cumberland School Volunteers first Director - as a volunteer! Her early organizational efforts focused on building working relationships with principals, teachers and district administrators, convincing them of the benefits of engaging parent and community volunteers in the work of the schools. The foundation that she laid has served the Cumberland School Volunteers for over 35 years.
