We offer school programs for grades K-12, public lectures, performances, symposia, festivals and a broad range of related programs and events. The Museum is open from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays from September through May; during the summer (June-August), hours expand to Tuesday through Sunday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
History:
Located on the shores of Mount Hope Bay in historic Bristol, RI, the Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology is surrounded by 350 acres of woodland. The family of Rudolf F. Haffenreffer donated both the Museum and the lands to Brown University in 1955. With collections numbering in the thousands the Museum is a treasure house of objects from the Americas, Africa, Asia, and the Pacific. It is one of the finest centers in New England for research on Native American material culture. Museum seminars attract scholars of international reputation, and the Museum's acclaimed publication series in material culture documents the Haffenreffers' collections for the public. The interest and involvement of Brown professors and students enhances the Museum's exhibitions, lectures and other public education programs.
