INSIGHT's mission is to provide comprehensive programs and services that empower people who are blind or visually impaired to lead more productive, complete and independent lives at home, work and in the community.

Description:
INSIGHT is the only nonprofit in the state providing comprehensive programs and services for people who are blind or visually impaired. With a professional staff of 30, we help nearly 6,000 people each year. Our programs include classes that teach people how to continue normal activities such as cooking, pouring a glass of water without spilling, writing and diabetes management; support services that provide group and individual counseling; volunteer services that furnish
sighted guides and drivers as well as readers for tape recording services or in-home visits; a low vision clinic that supplies optical aids to enhance
individuals' residual sight so they may be able to
continue working, reading or watching their favorite TV programs: a unique closed-circuit radio information service that broadcasts readings from local newspapers, popular magazines and books: and a technology center that instructs people how to use a computer with assistive technology. We also operate a workshop in Rumford where we employ people who are blind, severely visually impaired or multi-disabled.

History:
INSIGHT was founded in 1923 and incorporated in 1925 as the Rhode Island Association for the Blind. We began as a group of volunteers that wanted to find and/or create employment opportunities for the state's blind and visually impaired population. Over the years, we have adopted a holistic philosophy that
addresses both the physical and emotional needs of people who are blind or visually impaired.
