The Pawtucket Public Library Family Literacy Program is a "first step" program for immigrant and refugee families. To encourage life-long learning, parents and their children work both alone and together to improve their English abilities. Volunteers can work in small groups with adults or as an assistant in the children's classroom.
Description:
Our Program: Classes are run on a semester schedule: September- December January - May Summer Session - TBD Classes meet on the following days and times: Monday and Wednesday 4:00 -6:00 Tuesday and Thursday 4:00 - 6:00 Tuesday and Thursday 6:30 - 8:30 Volunteers are asked to commit to one class. Volunteers are also asked to arrive at least 15 minutes before class, as to become familiar with the plans for the day. Our Students: Our adult learners have a wide range of previous educational experiences; from no school at all, to post-graduate degrees, and everything in between. As such, students are placed in our classes based on speaking, reading, and writing abilities and study based on their individual goals. Children ages 4-12 can be registered by parents who regularly attend the class. Children participate a in a variety of activities such as homework help, arts and crafts, and playing games. Parents and children come together to participate in a learning activity at least once a week. The program serves from 70 - 100 students in all each semester. Our Teachers: The program has a Lead Teacher, a Children's Teacher, and a Computer Teacher. The Lead Teacher coordinates the program. She also plans and teaches lessons to adult learners. The Computer Teacher plans and teaches lessons around computer skills to adult learners. The Children's Teacher plans lessons and teaches to children. She also assists with program coordination, as needed.
History:
Rhode Island Family Literacy Initiative began in the Providence libraries. Many families with limited English were bringing their children to story time. Parents expressed that they wanted to improve their English. The library began to offer classes where adults could learn English, American customs, and computer skills. Meanwhile, children were offered extra help with school work, social opportunities, and other activities to foster their success in the USA. Since that time the Family Literacy Initiative has spread to 11 libraries in the state. The libraries provide instant access to the many free resources available to students and families.
