The mission of Advent House is to provide homeless people, primarily those with substance abuse issues and/or mental health problems, the structure and support they need to put their lives in order and become self-sufficient. Advent House was founded in 1980.
History:
Advent House, Inc., was formed in 1980. In December of the same year, the corporation opened Advent House, the first emergency shelter in Rhode Island. The purpose of Advent House was to provide short-term, emergency shelter and meals for up to 10 homeless people a night. In 1984, Advent House, Inc., recognized that this service alone was inadequate to help homeless persons make a successful transition to permanent housing. The vast majority of the homeless individuals in the emergency shelter had substance abuse problems and many were mentally ill, creating barriers to living independently. Consequently, Advent House, Inc., opened a second residence, Emmanuel House, which provided supportive, transitional housing for up to 13 individuals. In addition to housing homeless individuals, both programs provided individual case management focused on self-sufficiency by resolving problems that led to homelessness. From 1980 to the present, Advent House has consistently operated at full capacity. During the past 25 years Advent House Inc., has provided housing for more than 7,244 homeless Rhode Islanders. Last year alone, Advent House, Inc., assisted 296 of the more than 5,686 Rhode Island homeless. As the oldest homeless housing agency in Rhode Island, Advent House, Inc., owns and operates 13 facilities in Providence, Rhode Island. 69 percent of our residents are low or no-income men; 31 percent are women. Roughly 70 percent are dually diagnosed with substance abuse and mental health problems, while 12 percent have no substance abuse issues
